Silvery Checkerspot Butterfly (Chlosyne nycteis)
Copyright: Fred Miller
This intensely patterned orange and black butterfly is an interesting addition to a garden. It is very similar to the Pearl Crescent but has white spots along the margin on the hind wings. They enjoy moist, open areas. The males participate in puddling and patrolling for interested females throughout the day. Throughout the winter months, the caterpillars hibernate at the base of flowers until spring. These beauties are a great addition to butterfly gardens.
