Little Wood Satyr Butterfly (Megisto cymela)
Copyright: Fred Miller
These butterflies are a lovely chestnut brown with darker lines across their wings. They have characteristic dark eyespots surrounded by bright yellow. Little Wood Satyrs are common in forest settings, especially near prairies and meadows.
The males are often seen in shady areas as they search for females. They have a slower flight than skippers, and although they fly close to the ground, they will occasionally reach the tops of trees. These beautiful butterflies mainly feed on sap from trees and are an excellent addition to your wooded areas.
