Red-banded Hairstreak Butterfly (Calycopis cecrops)
You will know when you come across a Red-banded Hairstreak by the bold orange-red racing stripe on the top side of its wings. A prominent graphic streak cuts the predominantly grey wings of this butterfly, edged in a thin band of white. An attractive dark blue spot near the side edge of the wings is like the number on a slick racecar. This butterfly tends to be most active at dusk when the red stripe glows proudly in the light of the setting sun.
The underside of the Red-banded Hairstreak’s wings is also grey but outlined in stripes of red, black, and white to help this confident creature stand out to any butterfly enthusiast. You’ll be mesmerized by the light show of the flapping wings. These butterflies are sure to stand out in a crowd.
