Do you think a butterfly ever looks back at being a caterpillar and wishes it could go back?
Thinks, man I miss crawling everywhere. If I could just go back to that I would be so happy! Silly right? Why would they want to give up the ability to fly. To float on the breeze and drink the sweet nectar from flowers.
But I couldn’t get that question out of my head the other day. I see people wanting to go back to the way it use to be, an old life, an old relationship. Not realizing that when you go back it is never the same.
I learned this when I came back to a country I had called home my whole life, something that I had been looking forward to the whole time I had lived overseas. But it was not the ‘home’ I had left. I was not the same person I had been when I left. I had changed. Just like the caterpillar changed into a butterfly. Different yet the same. Unrecognizable, yet the same.
Looking Back
Looking back is fun, maybe even educational at times. We do learn from our mistakes after all. We just can’t get stuck looking back. When you are constantly looking back over your shoulder you are bound to run into something. Fall down. Stumble.
I can’t help think of Genesis 19:26, the ultimate don’t look back story! Lots wife as they flee Sodom and Gomorrah and they are told to NOT look back. What does she do? Instead of running to safety and free from harm. She looks back. What happens? She is turned into a pillar of salt! Stuck forever looking back over her shoulder.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
When we make a decision to follow after Christ. It says we are a new creation. Just like the caterpillar turning into a butterfly. We are still the same person, yet when we accept Jesus’s love and grace we are made new. Unrecognizable to some. The old has gone. We won’t want to look back. We are new. We won’t need to look back. The new is here!
When we accept Jesus as our Savior He takes our little caterpillar lives, where we are crawling around in the dirt. Wraps us in his amazing Grace and love, like a chrysalis. He creates something new and beautiful.
Breath in………In Christ, the new creation has come
Breath out……the old is gone, the new is here!
