This genus of plants consists of about 200 species of annuals and perennials. They commonly grow in prairies, meadows, and mountainous locations. These plants were used frequently by American Indians. The flowers are edible and they used them as a condiment with fresh greens. They also used them in making shampoo, and to treat venereal diseases and strengthen their immune system. Other tribes also used the flowers as a paintbrush for art. These beautiful and unique flowers are a great addition to welcome into your gardens.
