There are hundreds of species and varieties of Buttercups with many of the species being native to North America. Depending on the type, this hearty plant can be found in woods, meadows and marshes.
Most Buttercups bloom May through July with some varieties blooming from April to August. The yellow flowers that are produced curve slightly upward to form a small rosette or subtle ‘cup’. They grow singly and typically have five glossy petals on their stems. Most species grow from 1 foot to 3 feet in height.
Because they have a toxic substance in their stems, they are not relished by animals. Some varieties can be invasive.
