Winter is coming and we still have a few Black Swallowtail caterpillars feeding on parsley – one of its host plants. To survive the winter, the Black Swallowtail caterpillars will leave the parsley plant and form chrysalises. Unlike earlier broods, adult butterflies won’t emerge until next spring when the weather is warmer.
How You Can Help Butterflies Survive The Winter
So as not to disturb any chrysalises, we’ll try to leave most areas of our gardens ‘as-is’ over winter.
If you’re planning to cut back perennials or clean out beds this fall, be sure to check carefully – you never know where a chrysalis might be – and save the rest of the clean-up for spring.
