Each year as winter fades and hints of spring are in the air, and our thoughts turn to our butterfly gardens. We remember how beautiful the gardens were and how the annuals we started indoors added so much color along with lots of butterfly and pollinator activity.
Our Three Favorite Annuals (so far) Include
In early March, we plant the seeds in tiny containers available at most big box stores or garden centers, add starter soil, and keep them moist. We have a sunroom with eastern exposure, so the early morning sun helps the seeds germinate and keeps the room a bit warmer than the rest of the house.
We keep an eye on our ‘babies’ for the next month, anticipating when we’ll see the first signs of life.
Starting seeds indoors is a great way to get a jump on a new growing season. And it’s a wonderful way for school-age children to get involved and learn how plants grow. And all summer long, they can watch ‘their’ flowers grow as they provide food for butterflies and other pollinators.
