Butterfly Eggs Identification Checklist
Let’s assume that you have found an egg! Here are seven questions to help you identify butterfly eggs:
- What is the shape of the egg – spherical, oval, or round?
- What color(s) is the egg?
- Does the egg have unique characteristics?
- Is the egg by itself or is there a cluster of eggs?
- Is the egg on a plant?
- Is the egg located on the top or underside of the leaf – or on the stem?
- What is the name of the plant the egg is on? The plant name will help identify the egg! (Remember, adding host plants to your garden will help attract butterflies and encourage them to lay their eggs. You will then have the opportunity to find the eggs, and witness the entire butterfly life cycle in your yard!)
